The Refugees Camp brings you a vibrant street parade in six splendid sections: Phantom of the Soca, Moulin Rouge, Cabaret, Bajan Bus Stop, Show Boat and The Color Purple.

“Theatre of the Streets” is an extravagant depiction of Bajan culture—the music, people, festival and pageantry. The costumes are bold, colourful and spectacular to reflect the essence of Barbados whose culture is as vivacious as it its scenic beauty.

The designs portray the theme ‘theatre of the streets’ through metaphors and theatrical symbolisms.

For instance, “Phantom of the Soca” describes our haunting love story with calypso.

“Bajan Bus Stop” is a scene of assembly where social politics is often discussed. The eyes of the peacock symbolize the gossips seeing all and ‘licking da mout.’

“Show Boat” describes the pageantry of our society that is often on parade—ladies and gents fashionably strutting at Bridgetown market or Queens Park at Easter.

“The Color Purple” is a metaphor for God’s beauty—regardless of how challenging our circumstances, may we never pass by a field of purple flowers, or see a rainbow and not notice.
